The phrase “New Year, New Me” has become a popular saying when the clock strikes midnight. One year ends and another begins, but one thing remains the same: creating New Year’s Goals and Resolutions is difficult. Neuroscience studies have shown that it’s imperative you write your goals down in order to achieve them. So, with everything going on at the start of a new year, where do you begin? We want to equip you with all the tips and tricks you’ll need to create the best New Year’s Goals that generate results.

Reflect on Your Past Year:

Ask yourself the difficult, thought-provoking questions. Take some time to think about what you and your business accomplished in the past year and what you would like to change or improve upon in the coming year. Re-identify your brand voice and what you stand for; things you’d like to do more of and goals you would like to adjust. What major business lessons did you learn? How did you practice a healthy work-life balance? Is there anything that feels incomplete or left undone from 2022? These questions will help you get to the bottom of your desires for the New Year and help pave the way as you move forward in 2023.

Make a Plan and Seek Support:

Break your goals down into smaller, actionable steps and create a plan for how you will achieve them. Set specific, achievable goals rather than vague and unrealistic ideas. For example, instead of resolving to “accommodate your consumer preferences” set a goal to “accommodate your consumer preferences by conducting a focus group the topic related to your newest product or service.” Set deadlines for your goals and hold yourself accountable to those deadlines to  stay on track. Seek support by sharing these goals with your team to hold you and your business accountable and to help you stay motivated.

Track Your Progress and Don’t Get Discouraged:

Use a project management software to track your progress towards your goals. This can help you stay motivated and see how far your business has come. Stay positive and realistic! Keep a positive attitude and focus on the progress you are making, rather than dwelling on setbacks. Keeping your team involved will not only help you and everyone involved stay motivated but will increase the likelihood of success. Do not forget that adjustments along the way may be necessary. Be flexible and adjust your New Year’s goals as needed to ensure that you are on track to achieve them.

Most Importantly: Celebrate Your Successes.

Don’t forget to celebrate your achievements along the way! Hold a quarterly meeting with your team where you all can review the successes you have achieved along the way. Celebrating your success and progress is scientifically beneficial because it gives you the chemical boost of serotonin which conditions you to practice a success-mindset. Noticing and celebrating even the small wins keeps you motivated and encourages you to continue along the path of success. And sometimes success is the courage to continue. Every step you take towards achieving your goals brings you one step closer to the type of life and business you want to have and the person you want to be.

After an eventful 2022, it is completely normal to feel usure about what the New Year will bring. Instead of fearing failure or setbacks, look forward to the positive strides that are possible. Setting goals is a personal process as much as a part of business; take your time and figure out what works best for you and your business. Start small; you do not have to make huge changes all at once. If you do not meet a goal, try to figure out how you can adjust your approach moving forward. Overall, the most important thing is to approach goal-setting with a positive mindset and a willingness to learn and grow.
